On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Basic Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
