As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves inhaling severely hazardous air that registered in the "severe" category.

Alarming Air Quality Readings

Various sections of the city showed an AQI exceeding 500, which equals 10x the healthy threshold established by the WHO.

Particular areas, readings of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times exceeding safe standards.

Fireworks Restrictions and Current Developments

Since 2020, authorities had enforced a complete ban on the sale and use of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the hazardous pollution that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather begins.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the current local government approached the highest court to seek a modification of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been criticized by conservation groups as being only about 30% less polluting – as a balance between "heritage and public health".

Court Ruling and Reality

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological activists, the court complied with the proposal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific periods throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with little regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Many monitoring devices throughout Delhi registered pollution reaching highest levels around midnight to extremely hazardous readings seen during the festival in at least recent memory.

International Implications

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the festival also triggered a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming worsening air quality in Lahore on pollutants coming from neighboring India following the festivities.

Persistent Environmental Issue

Extremely elevated levels of pollution in the city have persisted as a serious issue for over a decade and a half, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Near the festival period, the levels of dangerous particles in the atmosphere has been found to spike to seventy percent above the peak readings ever recorded in Beijing, which was formerly viewed as the globally most contaminated city.

Multiple Contamination Contributors

This crisis in the city is attributed to a convergence of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, building projects, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in adjacent areas of Punjab and Haryana.

Throughout these areas, farmers illegally set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, creating toxic smog that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.

Medical and Economic Impact

Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million residents residing in the Delhi area is enormous, according to multiple studies.

The contaminated air causes increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be causing 10,000 early mortalities each year in Delhi.
