RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
